so grab it while it's hot off the press and keep reading for an awesome guest post with Sara B. Larson!!!

SARA B. LARSON is the author of the acclaimed young adult fantasy Defy trilogy: DEFY, IGNITE, and ENDURE. She can’t remember a time when she didn’t write books—although she now uses a computer instead of a Little Mermaid notebook.

Sara lives in Utah with her husband and their children. She writes in brief snippets throughout the day (while mourning the loss of nap time) and the quiet hours when most people are sleeping. Her husband claims she should have a degree in “the art of multitasking.” When she’s not mothering or writing, you can often find her at the gym repenting of her sugar addiction.

 Differences between the kingdoms of
Éadrolan & Dorjhalon,
plus how the magic system works!
by Sara B. Larson

Thank you for having me!

In DARK BREAKS THE DAWN, the characters are all Draíolon, which I imagine to be similar to the Elves in LOTR and Fae from many other books. They’re tall, they’re fast, they’re quite beautiful compared to normal humans, they have all sorts of coloring…and they have magic.

There are two kingdoms, Éadrolan (the Light Kingdom) and Dorjhalon (the Dark Kingdom). Light Draíolon from Éadrolan control Light—powers that stem from daylight, spring, and summer; while Dark Draíolon from Dorjhalon control Darkness—powers that stem from night, fall, and winter. Both are needed and necessary to maintain balance in their world. For example, a Light Draíolon can wield lightning and what we would consider normal fire, while Dark Draíolon have ice and shadowflame. Light Draíolon are strengthened by heat and daylight, while the Dark Draíolon prefer the cold of winter and can see better at night.

While it may seem that the war between the kingdoms in DARK BREAKS THE DAWN is Dark vs. Light, that is not, in fact, the case. This is not the story of how Dark = evil and Light = good. It is a story of the desires and control of a few harming the many (King Bain, in this case, driving his subjects to fight his battle, though many, if not most, of them don’t wish to do so). It is not evil vs. good—the majority of Draíolon are inherently good, Dark and Light alike. But Evelayn and her kingdom must fight back and try to stop Bain before he destroys the balance in their world for good. And if you think you know who is fighting on the right side of the line by the end of DARK BREAKS THE DAWN, you might want to wait to make that judgement until the conclusion in BRIGHT BURNS THE NIGHT…. Mwahahaha, I know, I’m so mean to tease. But I want my readers to know that many are not what they seem, even by the end of the first book, so be careful to make judgements and search for those clues of what’s to come….

SUMMARY:

On her eighteenth birthday, Princess Evelayn of Eadrolan, the Light Kingdom, can finally access the full range of her magical powers. The light looks brighter, the air is sharper, and the energy she can draw when fighting feels almost limitless.

But while her mother, the queen, remains busy at the war front, in the Dark Kingdom of Dorjhalon, the corrupt king is plotting. King Bain wants control of both kingdoms, and his plan will fling Evelayn into the throne much sooner than she expected.

In order to defeat Bain and his sons, Evelayn will quickly have to come into her ability to shapeshift, and rely on the alluring Lord Tanvir. But not everyone is what they seem, and the balance between the Light and Dark comes at a steep price. In the first book of a remarkable duology, Sara B. Larson sets the stage for her reimagining of Swan Lake -- a lush romance packed with betrayal, intrigue, magic, and adventure.
