Top 6 Characters I NEVER Clicked With AND Top 6 Books That Made Me Realize I'm Not an Epistolary Reader!

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish.
Every once in a while I participate in this one when I either
1) Like the theme, and/or 2) Have the time!

This week's topic:
Ten Characters I NEVER Clicked With!

I'm going to customize this theme!

I'm the kind of person who doesn't really like a book/show/etc if I don't like the main character and can't connect. Case in point? The only Avengers movie/superhero I don't care for is Tony Stark/Iron Man, and people think I'm nuts because you're not SUPPOSED to like him. Okay, that's great buuuuuuut....it made me not like the movies with him, soooooo.... That's just the way I am!!!

Six books came to mind right away when I chose this topic, so I went with them. THEN I decided to add in six books from a genre I don't like to read. I didn't realize I wasn't a fan of epistolary novels until I read a few almost back to back, so I'm going to point that out today, too!

In No Particular Order...

1) SAM from BEFORE I FALL by Lauren Oliver

This is the only one of Lauren Oliver's books I don't own. I appreciate what Oliver did with her debut novel, but I disliked Sam SO much that it took away my ability to enjoy this novel and I have no desire to give the book a second chance. Even though Sam DOES change and is SUPPOSED to be unlikable. I'm telling you, I just CAN'T when I can't click with a character!

2) GIA from THE FILL-IN BOYFRIEND by Kasie West

I was really looking forward to this year's release from Kasie West. She's one of the few YA contemporary authors on my auto-read list. But MAN, I could not STAND Gia!!!! I really struggled with the book because this girl!!!!

My Review

3) GRACE from ALL FALL DOWN by Ally Carter

I thought Grace was really reckless, and I had trouble enjoying this book the way I have the other series Ally Carter has released so far. I probably won't continue the series, but who knows, maybe someday I'll try again. Depends on what people say when it's finished!

4) AMY GUMM from DOROTHY MUST DIE by Danielle Paige

Amy Gumm annoyed me SO MUCH that I really have no desire to read the rest of this series. I just wanted to bash the character  upside the head and knock some sense into her!!! I was also annoyed that the summary for the first book's climax was on the freaking book as the tag, but that's another story. I love Danielle Paige as a person and want to read more from her, but I really don't want to go back to this world!

My Review

5) CHRISTIAN from THE SUMMER OF CHASING MERMAIDS by Sarah Ockler

This time around, it was the love interest that did me in. I was like, "Girl, can you not see how horrible of a choice Christian is!?" It made me REALLY not care for this book, and that's a shame, because it was one of my MOST highly-anticipated books of the year. AND everyone else on the blogosphere LOVES it. But I really, REALLY don't!!!!

6) TRIXIE *and* LAURA from THE TENTH CIRCLE by Jodi Picoult

Jodi Picoult has been a long-time favorite of mine, but this is one of my least-favorite books by her. It was also one of my most-anticipated because it incorporated graphic novel pages and it delved into Dante's The Inferno. But OMG, I hated Trixie and her mother Laura SO SO SO SO SO SO much. I was reading only to see the scenes with Trixie's father Daniel, who you really only see through his comic pages. And all of the twists and turns just made me hate these two even more. I don't want to ever read this book ever again, even though I own it...and still read and enjoy the author!

EPISTOLARY NOVELS

The following novels made me realize that I am NOT a fan of epistolary novels. I wondered why I couldn't get into a series when I loved author Meg Cabot, or why it took me two weeks to read THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER, even though it's barely 200 pages. Then, I read a few big titles back-to-back and realized...ahhhh, I just don't like this writing style! Journals, essays, emails, texts, letters....if this is all the book consists of, it probably isn't a book for me!

All of these books prove it to me...I decided to try again last year with Ava Dellaira, especially since it had some big recommendations, but I still couldn't do it!

Ready for the list of culprits that defined this genre for me?

1) THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER by Stephen Chbosky
2) WHERE'D YOU Go, BERNADETTE by Maria Semple
3) LOVE LETTERS TO THE DEAD by Ava Dellaira
4) THE EXECUTION OF NOA P. SINGLETON by Elizabeth L. Silver (My Review)
5) The Boy Trilogy by Meg Cabot
6) RECONSTRUCTING AMELIA by Kimberly McCreight (My Review)

Which characters were hard to click with for you?
