{A Twist in the Tail} Movie News on Maleficent, The Little Mermaid, and Peter Pan!

Love fairy tales and mythology?
Fans of mermaids, dragons, unicorns, and other mythical creatures?
Enjoy when a beloved classic tale is retold?
A Twist in the Tail Thursdays features all this and more!

Okay, so there has been a LOT of movie news this week that should make fairy tale fans everywhere happy!

And here's a bonus goodie for stopping by that's not quite fairy tale related, but still excited:
Yesterday, Pixar announced that IT IS MAKING A SEQUEL to The Incredibles! Ahhhhhh! I am so ecstatic!! If there's one Pixar movie that actually needs a sequel, it's this one! They finally have a good story to tell, since Brad Bird didn't want to make a sequel until he had one! (Unlike yesterday's announcement about Cars 3, my least favorite Pixar franchise...)

First up...

You are living under a ROCK if you don't know by now that Disney is making Maleficent, a live-action movie revolving around the villain from Sleeping Beauty. It stars Angelina Jolie and Elle Fanning (Yep, Dakota Fanning's little sister!), and is scheduled to drop May 30, 2014.

The first trailer recently debuted online. Are you ready???

We get to see Maleficent's WINGS. And we get to see the DRAGON!!!!

I'm not sure if it can quite beat the epicness of the last trailer, though, if only because taking the "Once Upon a Dream" song and having Lana Del Rey turn it upside down and being all villainous and creepy is AWESOME.

Here's a BONUS VIDEO that's nothing but the song!

Next up...

Casting announcements are going out for the 2015 release of Joe Wright's Pan.

Newcomer Levi Miller will play Peter Pan. Garrett Hedlund will have the coveted role of Captain Hook, Rooney Mara is set to be Tiger Lily, and my favorite  reveal of all? Hugh Jackman is tapped to play a pirate named Blackbeard! Popular roles such as Tinkerbell and Wendy have yet to be announced. There's already a huge fervor around the casting of Mara, so it will be interesting to see if it sticks, since the studio has hemmed and hawed about how "official" her casting is!

Variety states,

"The film will be a new take on the classic story. It is set during WWII and follows an orphan who is kidnapped by pirates and brought to Neverland, where he discovers he’s destined to save the land from the pirate Blackbeard."

This is tentatively set to come out July 15, 2015.

And finally...

A new director has been announced to helm the big screen release of The Little Mermaid (title may change). Joe Wright was set to direct. But now he's working on Pan. So who is available to take up his mantle? Why, Sofia Coppola, of course! The director of movies such as Lost in Translation, The Virgin Suicides, and Marie Antoinette is now set to try her hand at a fairy tale retelling. Don't expect Disney, though! This version will be based on the original, tragic tale. At one point in time, there was going to be a live-action movie made that centered around Carolyn Turgeon's retelling MERMAID. I don't know if it was this film or another. The script for this version is being reworked right now.

No date has been announced as of yet, but the film is on the fast track, and if all goes well, we'll be hearing more news soon!

Which retellings are you eager to see on the big screen?
Any casting predictions for Pan or The Little Mermaid?
